We have a great ER about 5 minutes from our house. I know, because I've been there. THREE times in TWO years. We were actually just there in September on Sydney's birthday because of her high fever that wouldn't go away.
Our most recent visit was earlier this week again for little Syd. Remember that "stomach bug"I referenced earlier? Well I sent her to school Tuesday and not even an hour later I get a call that her hands and feet are blue. And that she was very very quiet, definitely not herself.
I had almost completely rearranged my work schedule when I got another call from her school that she had vomited everywhere.
We headed to the ped. I wasn't concerned about the vomiting but I was concerned about her blue extremities which were also cold.
She was pretty lethargic but had no fever.
The ped ran some blood work after the flu test came back negative. Her ears looked good, her throat looked good, her heart rate was strong and regular. I could tell the ped was concerned though because she couldn't find ANY reason for Sydney to be so tired. So, she directed us to the ER. She called ahead so as soon as we got there, we were pulled back into a room.
It took not one, not two, not three, not four but FIVE nurses to hit a vein on Sydney. To be fair, the first nurse got a vein in her hand and was able to draw blood for labs but it got pulled out so we had to reattempt to start the IV. Girlfriend was MADDER than a firecracker. I kept watching them stick and stick and stick her and was getting really upset for her. But, it had to be done.
Finally, a fifth nurse walked in. She was very resigned as she said, "I guess I'm next in line." (Yes, exact words). With the help of another nurse, a bright light and a vein finder, they were able to get her IV line in her arm.
Blood work confirmed her glucose was low. It had even dropped since we left the peds office. "Low" is 70. Syd was at 59. They confirmed she wasn't diabetic but thought the sugar level was why she had blue extremities. They also described her capillary refill as "sluggish"…aka….she was dehydrated. This surprised me. She had a very wet diaper just a few hours earlier when I got her out of bed. So, all of this happened to her little body quickly.
NOT happy about what just happened to me. I'm too tired to fight any more. I'm going to sit here, get my glucose, get my fluid and get my butt home.
The fluids took 90 minutes to administer so I kicked back, held my baby, and watched tv.
Nana and grandpa were able to keep Maddie for us a for a bit so Chris could come help me with Sydney. He brought me some food and let me take a bathroom break. I'd been there for several hours at this point. (Remember…5 nurses. I am not even sure the fifth one WORKED there, she may have been called in! And, it's not like they were back to back. I had to wait between each one.)
Finally, the fluids were in and Sydney had much better coloring and her glucose had risen 21 points to 80. So, we were dismissed. We were advised to monitor food/liquid intake and asked to call the ped if she trended downhill again.
Two days later and she is doing much better. Starting to eat and act normally! Thank goodness!!
